Most adults in Ireland are assessed either through the HSE, usually after a GP referral, or privately, where you choose and pay a provider yourself. For the detail on waits, costs and what happens after diagnosis, read our full guide to adult ADHD assessment in Ireland, or see whether you need a GP referral.
The public route usually starts with your GP, who can refer you to your local community mental health team. The HSE has been building dedicated adult ADHD teams, but they do not yet cover the whole country, and waits can be long. In 2024 TheJournal.ie reported waits of up to four years in Wicklow and south Dublin, where new GP referrals were paused for a time.
Private assessments are carried out by clinical psychologists or consultant psychiatrists, often online. Full adult pathways we found published in October 2026 cost roughly €930 to €1,350, sometimes paid in stages. Some providers ask for a GP referral letter before you book.
Both can assess and diagnose ADHD. Only a doctor can prescribe medication. If a psychologist assesses you and you later want to consider medication, you may also need to see a psychiatrist, and some psychiatrists prefer to carry out their own assessment. Ask about this before you book, so you know what the full cost could be.
Fees paid to doctors, consultants and psychologists can usually be claimed under health expenses relief at the standard rate of 20%, through Revenue's myAccount, for up to four years after you pay. You cannot claim amounts that an insurer or the HSE has refunded. Check with Revenue for your own situation.
