Sleep Formula
Sleep Formula discloses every ingredient at its exact dose — valerian 150mg, chamomile 100mg, GABA 100mg, L-tryptophan 100mg, lemon balm 100mg, passion flower 100mg, melatonin 2mg. No blend name, no combined total: seven numbers on the label, not one. That's rarer than it should be: plenty of sleep products fold their botanicals into a proprietary "blend" and print only the total weight, which leaves you unable to tell whether any single ingredient is present at a level that matters. Some competitors do disclose every amount, as we do — the point is that you should be able to check, and here you can. Two capsules daily.*
Evidence reviewed: September 2026.
- A valerian meta-analysis we cited does not exist. This page credited “a 2023 meta-analysis pooling 21 randomized trials (1,433 people).” We could not locate it in any database, so we have removed it rather than substitute a number. What the published umbrella reviews actually find is summarised above, including the parts that don't favour valerian.
- We were wrong about a competitor. This page said OLLY groups its sleep botanicals into a proprietary blend and discloses only a total. OLLY's panel lists each botanical with its own milligram amount. The claim is removed and we apologise for it.
- The chamomile trial was described as randomised at 400mg/day. It was quasi-experimental with a no-treatment control, and the dose was 400mg twice daily.
- The GABA trial increased total non-REM sleep, which we had written as “slow-wave sleep.” The effect size (about 5.3 minutes off sleep latency) and the manufacturer funding are now stated.
We also removed a line saying Sleep Support was “still finishing its own per-ingredient disclosure.” That was untrue and contradicted our other pages: those amounts are not available to publish, full stop.
What's in it, and why
Valerian root, 150mg — the most-studied sleep herb on this label, and the evidence is genuinely mixed. A 2024 umbrella review of the systematic reviews (Eur Neuropsychopharmacol) concluded that valerian has a good safety record and does appear to improve subjectively rated sleep quality, but that its efficacy has not been demonstrated on objective or quantitative measures, and that the underlying studies are heterogeneous and of low methodological quality. One 2024 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 80 adults did improve both subjective scores and actigraphy/polysomnography measures over eight weeks. Worth knowing on dose: most valerian trials use more than the 150mg here, so treat this as a supporting amount rather than a studied one. Full evidence →
Chamomile, 100mg — in a 28-day trial in 77 nursing-home residents, 400mg taken twice a day — 800mg daily — significantly improved sleep quality scores against a control group. Two honest caveats: that study was quasi-experimental with a no-treatment control rather than a placebo, and our 100mg is an eighth of the daily amount it used. We'd rather say so than round the claim up. Full evidence →
GABA, 100mg — the same dose used in EEG sleep studies by Yamatsu and colleagues, which shortened time to fall asleep and increased total non-REM sleep time — non-REM, not specifically deep slow-wave sleep, which is what an earlier version of this page said. The effect was small: about 5.3 minutes off sleep latency. Those studies were also single-blind and run by a GABA ingredient manufacturer, and whether oral GABA meaningfully crosses the blood-brain barrier remains a genuinely debated question. We disclose the dose because it's on our label; we're not going to oversell what it does. What oral GABA can (and can't) do →
L-Tryptophan, 100mg — the amino acid your body converts toward serotonin and melatonin. Full evidence →
Lemon Balm & Passion Flower, 100mg each — calming botanicals with real trial support, both dosed here below the amounts those trials used: lemon balm's clearest acute effects came at 1,600mg, and the main passion flower trial used a liquid extract rather than a comparable capsule dose. Disclosed, so you can judge it. Lemon balm → · Passion flower →
Melatonin, 2mg — stated plainly: this is below the dose where the effect on sleep onset peaks. Pooled data from 26 randomised trials (Cruz-Sanabria et al., J Pineal Res 2024, 1,689 observations) puts that peak at around 4mg. 2mg is a reasonable, well-tolerated starting dose, not a claim that it matches the highest-effect dose studied. Our Sleep Support sits the other side of that line, at 10mg — above the studied peak. Don't take the two the same night. Full dose-response evidence →
Common questions
How is this different from Sleep Support? Sleep Formula is fully dose-disclosed with 2mg melatonin — for anyone who wants every number on the label known. Sleep Support is a broader 14-ingredient blend at 10mg melatonin, and its per-ingredient amounts are not disclosed and cannot be — our manufacturer confirmed in September 2026 that it will not release them, so that is not a gap closing over time. Sleep Formula is the only product in our range where every dose is published. On melatonin the two sit either side of the studied peak of roughly 4mg: Sleep Formula's 2mg is below it, Sleep Support's 10mg is above it. Don't take both the same night. How to choose between them →
Why only 2mg melatonin, not more? See the dose-response note above — 2mg is a well-tolerated starting point; we'd rather disclose an honest, moderate dose than oversell a higher one. Full evidence →
How do you back this up? We ask our manufacturer for batch testing, and we have not published a certificate of analysis. The full-disclosure label above is the part you can actually check for yourself. And if Sleep Formula isn't right for you, our 90-day money-back guarantee covers your first order, opened or not.
